We
get asked a lot, about our worship. The typical
questions about traditional and contemporary always come
up. We have found that our worship style is hard
to describe and it is better experienced.
We think it is fair to say that our worship is
simple, fresh, and straightforward. We seek to
be authentic in everything we do and we believe that
is demonstrated each and
every week by our worship. Dave Pitts and a
team of others work very hard to honor God and
provid people a literal sanctuary of peace each and
every week. While we meet in the cafeteria of
a Deer Valley Elementary School, you will be able to
experience its transformation into a holy space each
Sunday.
We do not separate the ministry of fellowship and
hospitality from our worship. We begin each Sunday
at 10 AM around the fellowship table
spread with morning beverages* and
light snacks. We enter into our worship space around
10:15 give or take a few minutes.
When entering we often have a visual sermon place on
a table central to our worship area. This area is
often designed by local artists who have reflected on
the theme of the day and have creatively captured it in
some way. We believe that the church of Christ should be
a creative community and these visual sermons are just
one way that Fellowship of the Valley seeks to support
the arts.
The
worship is interactive and participatory. We sing,
we read, we respond, we enjoy times of silence, we give,
and we receive. Most Sundays, we conclude our
service by observing communion. People are invited
to come to the table of the Lord if they are seeking
Christ, and we respect those who are not. We
typically practice what is technically called intinction,
where one breaks a piece of the bread from a server and
dips the bread into the wine and then places it in their
mouth. For those who are sensitive to the issue of
real wine, we provide small cups of grape juice.
This common meal at the table is one of the highlights
of our time together. We usually close with a word
of peace to one another and a benediction either sung or
spoken.
All that to say, you just have to experience the
worship to understand it. It is a refreshing
experience and one that makes you yearn for the next
time we gather. We also yearn for you to worship
with us.
